Interview with Kapusa Oriental Choir from Nigeria

Folks we are here with Kapusa Oriental Choir from Nigeria from Lagos the center of excellence and I'm going to ask them why afro beats are taking over the world what do you think afro beats yeah afro be is taking the world afro yeah like BNA boy you know all over the world what is it what's the the magic in this music okay I will for for start I would said it's um the instrumentals the the artist the dedication The Twist the spirit of Africans you know and mostly it's from Nigeria and Nigeria well spirited you know we put our best and everything into our craft and we give it our best in the

[Music] short oh yes [Music] now listen cuz I stand I stand strong you yeah I stand yeah I stand strong afrit has been hidden for so long so it's time to come out to the world cuz you know from slavery down to you know the world is changing and it's revolving so we need to be out and we are so happy that afrob is going worldwi yeah yes well you're not really representing afro beats right you you are chir you right so how is it you know not being like actually afrit artist and uh are you receiving a lot of interest from outside Nigeria yes of course the interest we are receiving are mainly from outside of Nigeria to be honest and that's really weird because people from outside countries seem to connect with our music in the most unusual way like for example they said um our version of Soo took over Poland they saw people reposting the songs everywhere and that actually amazes us when we look at our Spotify insights the good number of fans that we have are either from Ukraine Germany um Russia um Poland and all other countries and then we also have a huge fan base in Nigeria as well which is our home so that's it right there are you trying to say that Eastern Europeans are um you know like the your your music more than the like Western Europeans no Nigerians love us like today you just said that you know like the eastern part of Europe likes you got fans they they they connect to the music in a way that we cannot explain in a way that we did not expect them to connect to we did not expect this kind of love for this kind of music because we didn't know if they would relate to our music but then to our greatest surprise the love Is Just massive and it drew our attention and here we are in Poland today for Africa be Festival not just here to perform but to headline the Africa Beast festival and that's just mindblowing yeah extraordinary yes all right all right folks [Music] [Music] theal I've been Ling [Music] [Music] [Music] sing that's right are you folks tell me you know how are you received in Nigeria are you touring Nigeria are you what where else did you go and and uh perform okay yes we are received in Nigeria like very well we performed there was a huge show we had in December last year in a place called um Bonnie Island in poot it was a huge show which we headlined as well and you know it's Nigeria so they understand this music well the energy is massive it's just like what we had this night it was just crazy it's always crazy p c right because you're from Lagos so that was like a different part of of Nigeria and you were received very well over there as well exactly are you guys from Legos you like Yuba guys we actually from Abuja Abuja is the federal capital city of Nigeria but we as well have a base in Lagos so the choir is large you know the is large we have a in Lagos a in Abuja a in poot in all parts of Nigeria yes but mainly in Abuja so we are from different tribes in Nigeria I'm IBO I'm from the eastern part of Nigeria she's from the eastern part of Nigeria he's from the eastern part he's from the northern part of Nigeria yeah and she is she's from the southern part of Nigeria so we are all from different tribes and then we blend together to give you what you see yeah how long guys I've heard your performance it was amazing I heard you singing like covers of was the the the big song that came out from South Africa shabam yes when we did shabam you know and we put it out there um some people started to say that they loved it more than the original version and that actually we were humbled to hear that but big UPS to the original song because that song is really big in Africa he big in South Africa he big in Nigeria and we were inspired when we heard that song so we had to hit the studio and then get that song ready and then it blew everywhere people it blew our imagination beyond our imagination and it's a big song right now yes how do you get new members for your choir is it like a test you have to pass or yes we have auditions which we run yes from time to time time is always ongoing and then there are people who also send us messages and tell us that they would love to be a part of our choir and then when they send those messages we audition them and if they make the cut they join the choir so we always have people we are always recruiting people into the choir the choir is very large and huge in how many members we are close to 60 something members currently and you the best ones chosen for theal yes all good yes we are all good it also it just depends on the particular performance and then what we need to bring to life because everyone is unique in their own way everyone has something that they bring to the table if you watch the performance today you will see that as much as we are all alike we are also different in our own art so we just pick the particular art that fits that event yes and then we move with that are you you guys not tempted go more into afro bits you know more like popular music are you not tempted to go into that direction we are we already in afrob beats already afrob beit is in our blood so it's something we can do in our sleep so but however we've been doing afrobats and people are connecting with afro beats but then we also have some songs that are another generous like trap drill we also have a ballad and next year we are working on an album which is going to come out next year and it's going to feature different genres of songs you're going to have Rock you're going to see a choir rock song you're going to see a hip-hop song and then you're also going to see afro beat in another dimension so we are delving into all genes of music yeah all right can I just ask each of you what's your favorite Nigerian artist at the moment um I would say deido deido yes deido David to yes I would say Asha I love Asha so much I love her music so much she's such an inspiration okay I'll say I'm a fan of Johnny drill Johnny drill yeah he's not very famous yeah he's not but I love it I love the way he manages his craft and then he's all about his music it's so intentional so I really connect with him I'll say deido as well and then suris we all love omale [Music] is the top we love him so [Music] muchy heyy heyyyy [Music] oh okay yeah right today in the Polish news there was a lot of stories about polish students being arrested in Nigeria for taking part in a in a protest against the government apparently they were only taking photos are you all right to talk about it yes of course it's something that concerns all of us as Nigerians you know the protest that is going on in Nigeria is the people crying out for what they want so people have what they want and what they want to see in a country and they have a right to cry out and to get that and then the government also owes it to the people to listen to their cries and Implement what they are asking for they're not asking for too much they're just asking for better government a better governance and yes and the economy and I believe it's something that every nation would love as good as a nation is it can always get better so Nigeria can be better and that's what they are asking for it's not something bad it's something that it's the voice of the people so surprised you know you're are not worried to talk about this because I heard that the situation is getting quite quite serious yes it's getting quite serious but then um it has not really gotten out of hand as we expected it to so I believe something is being done currently for the situation so that's why it has not gotten out of hand the government is listening I believe and they're going to do something about it yes but the voice of the people is strong yeah all right you guys as musicians could I ask you about like other African artists that you like and uh what country they come from okay um I like um David yeah do you like like what about like amap piano and all this okay yes I actually love amap piano amap piano is from South Africa right so yeah I love amap piano so much but what's what's better afro beats or amap piano we don't want to start a war we start a war in Nigeria so there's no really a favorite you know they are all amazing afro beat and my piano are all amazing generous right cuz I hear a lot of Nigerians artist are jumping into Arma piano what do you think about it I don't think they are jumping into Amma piano they're just mixing it bring out something nice so they're not jumping they're just merging the both we are one and we get to you know diversify and you know get to feel the same you know gener of music as well yeah this Africa is more like a connectivity we we tend to like extend this um will I say form of partnership and collaborations is what artists do in order to keep themselves to the chain because afrob beat is Big am piano is also having its space so this is we are all Africans and then we coming together to just make that sound start up but be honest What would you pick on your party I'm a piano or afrit sorry AF piano afro piano here we go about afro piano just been born here situations for afro there are moments you get to feel afro beit there are moments you also get to feel I'm they all work different way you work with the vibe the mood you are in and all of that so all different and you can mix them together and to get a better sound all we all Africans so the difference is what makes it unique the fact that we are from different parts of Africa Nigeria South Africa coming together and makes it even better and you know it's what the people want everybody loves it so yeah we have to make it better for them of course yeah all right but let's come back to that question about the non Nigerian artist from some other African country cuz you said uh I can't remember what you said but like could you tell me other artists that you like I love mafikizolo so much because their sound I remember hearing their song Corner um when it came out and that song was such a huge inspiration the sound was just it touched me in a very special way so mafikizolo has just been up there there I always look forward to their songs their newest release and I hope to walk with them we hope to walk with them one day it's going to be Madness mafikizolo and Kaba Oriental choir Mafi kizo if you hear this you you know what get who to get hold of I Al I also love C impella cuz she's very young and you know she has the energy she Dan she's from she's from South Africa Cella yes so she dances and she also sings just like we do we dance and we also sing so it's like really nice yeah she Inspire she inspired me so much do you do you get to hear a lot of South African music in Nigeria yes of course they on Spotify and yes in clubs yeah Club B yeah clubs and yeah even on the streets [Music] anywh what about yourself okay so I think I would go with Tyler is I'll be what's South Africa again yeah South Africa like she she's she's big currently she's amazing and I love her voice she knows how to manage like the melody and then give it with the vibe so there's just this unique sound that was just born even though it's still the Arma piano it's just something different and yeah I I love her and there's also salty Soul yes they are actually amazing you know they are just they give a little bit of we can see a little bit of kabusa in their sound kabusa kabusa is a place in Abuja is where we recorded our first song where the studio is located so we adopted the name kabusa Oriental choir that's how we got the name yes beautiful performance today I think did you mention your non non- Nigerian African artist no I have a specific one but I'll say Tyler like the she just a particular song She Sang and it was really amazing like it caught the attention of every African country so I'll just pick up yes all right guys I wouldn't finish this interview if I wouldn't ask you about Berna boy you [Music] know the African giant himself he's known as and he was on remix yeah he's he's like feeling stadiums in Europe he very very big yes he really big bon boy is Big not just in Africa all over the world and it's someone that we hope to work with one of these days so burner hit us up hit Kaba up so that we'll finish work we love you so much so yes okay guys well thank you so much for the interview thanks for bringing the good energy yeah I've recorded your performance I will add to that interview in the background we've got Moroccan band actually at the moment are you going to perform in Europe anytime soon yes definitely we look forward to performing in more places in Europe after now before the end of the year and then also next year so watch out you're going to see us we might just pop up in austral pop up in France pop up in the UK and from there to the rest of the world so it's from kabusa to the rest of the world that's it all right how can we find you on social medias
